It is estimated that over 100,000 children in Scotland live in households where there is a known risk of domestic abuse. Growing up in a household with domestic abuse can have devastating consequences for children and young people. Prolonged exposure to domestic abuse can have a serious impact on a child's safety and welfare:

  • Children are at risk of physical injury during an incident.
  • Children are greatly distressed by witnessing the physical and emotional suffering of a parent.
  • Domestic abuse can restrict a parent's ability to parent correctly.
